WHAT IS MAGRAGAN?
The plural is Mahraganat and this music style is the next step in evolution from Egyptian Shaabi music... it began underground around the time of the Arab Spring and is now at a simmering hot boiling point for Egyptian pop culture with many Mahragan songs topping the Cairo charts.
Mahraganat were in the news lately with live concerts cancelled due to "inciting debauchery" in the Islamic Republic of Egypt.
WHAT ARE THE LYRICS?
Like Shaabi before it, Mahragan is heavily laced with political and sexual commentary, which makes it edgy.
"Salka" means "Rigid" and is a poem by artist Hassan Shakosh on the "rat race" and the urge to escape it. It raises questions of self-worth, dignity and freedom in modern life.
Rap-style with a catchy chorus, this song is a huge hit for 2021.
WHAT IS THE WORKSHOP?
A really fun, bouncy and lighthearted 2Hr choreo (by Beverli). This fusion of street-meets-bellydance captures the vibe and pulse of what is trending now in Cairo...
All levels are welcome, but a minimum of 2 months belly dance class is essential. Movements are adjusted as per level, but the whole point of street dance is that it is for EVERYONE! Basic fitness, however, is essential!
