Dancers not trained through Beverli's technical school are encouraged to begin their training there to understand how locomotive technique and musicality are one body of knowledge, which is crucial for starting this course. The advanced pro course: "Foundation of Dancing with Classical Arabic Music" incorporates technique theory and practice if you would prefer to start there... otherwise keep scrolling!
This is a very wide genre of Egyptian music (that includes both songs and the Awadi/ Balady Progression) , a loose term for a dance style in Belly Dance circles AND an Egyptian word meaning both "of the country" and "old school".
Balady music/dance grew from village roots into an urban expression at the time of the Industrial revolution. It birthed Shaabi, Magragan and the modern accordion solo.
Theory and practical for: hisotoric balady (origins), original footwork and weight placement, the culture of Balady songs, the development and structure of the Balady Awadi (Progression) and the nurturing of naturalising improvisation. We are introduced to a ton of Balady songs (in the category of essential pieces every Belly Dancer should know) and also have discussions around video examples of dancers interpretations of Balady.
All Beverli's advanced/pro courses are ideally studied in a small group, whether you are attending in-persn or online.
The 3hr rich and detailed modules (often 50/50 theory/practical) require "simmer time" between sessions to allow the full flavour of the material to develop. Modules will be 7-8 weeks apart and all materials/ recordings will be loaded to dropbox for lifetime reference/download.
